VaultCube

A backup only your recovery phrase can open

Short answer

VaultCube backs up each vault to your private iCloud, encrypted on your iPhone first. Apple stores ciphertext. We run no server and never receive it. On a new iPhone, your recovery phrase brings it back.

The problem with "no cloud"

A vault that lives only on one phone disappears with that phone. Most people want two things at once: nobody else can read the photos, and the photos survive a lost or broken iPhone.

How it works

  • Where: your own private iCloud storage, in VaultCube's container. It isn't shared with anyone and isn't visible in iCloud Photos.
  • What's uploaded: the same encrypted files that are on your phone, byte for byte, plus a sealed list of what each version contains.
  • Versions: every backup is a version. Keep them for 7, 30 or 90 days; the newest always stays.
  • Automatic (on by default), only while a vault is open: when it opens and the last backup is over a day old, and as you leave the app after changes. Automatic backups skip mobile data unless you allow it.
  • Restore inside a vault: pick a version, then Add missing files or Replace this vault.
  • New iPhone: Welcome → "Restore a backup" → recovery phrase → draw a pattern.

Why your pattern never goes to iCloud

A pattern has a few billion possibilities: fine on a phone that slows down every guess, but weak against computers working offline. So the backup holds only the copy of your vault key sealed by your 9-word phrase, which has about 99 bits of randomness. Your pattern stays on your iPhone.

What someone in your iCloud would see

That VaultCube backups exist, how many there are, how big they are and when each version was made. Not one photo, file name or note.

Also: iPhone and iPad (Pro)

With iPhone & iPad sync, the same vault stays up to date on both devices through the same encrypted backup, about once a minute while it's open.

The limits

  • Decoy vaults are never backed up.
  • iCloud storage is yours: a full iCloud pauses backups. The app shows why.

Questions

Does this use iCloud Photos?

No. Your photos are never in iCloud Photos, and the vault folder is excluded from normal iPhone backups. The only copy in iCloud is VaultCube's encrypted backup.

Can Apple read my backup?

No. Apple stores only ciphertext; only your recovery phrase can open it, and the phrase never leaves your devices.
