While a vault is open, VaultCube leaves it out of screenshots and screen recordings, covers it in the app switcher, and locks when you leave the app. If someone takes a screenshot anyway, the vault locks at once.
Why it matters
Encryption protects files at rest. Most leaks happen while the vault is open: a screenshot, a mirrored screen, the app switcher showing
your last photo to whoever picks up your phone.
What VaultCube does
Situation
What happens
Default
Someone takes a screenshot
The open vault shows as a black "Hidden by VaultCube" cover in the image
Always
…and then
The vault locks at once
On ("Lock on screenshots")
Screen recording or mirroring
The vault is hidden for as long as the screen is captured
Always
App switcher
A plain cover replaces the vault's last screen
On ("Hide in app switcher")
You switch apps
The vault locks the moment the app goes to the background
On ("Lock when leaving the app")
You prefer a delay
Turn the above off and choose auto-lock after 1 or 5 minutes
1 minute
Locking forgets every decrypted vault from memory. Your pattern opens it again.
The limits
iOS can't block screenshots. VaultCube draws the open vault in a protected layer that iOS leaves out of captures. This uses an iOS
behaviour that Apple could change in a future version.
Sheets and full-screen screens opened from the vault (share and export sheets, pattern changes, feedback) are outside that layer and can appear in screenshots and recordings.
A second camera pointed at your screen is outside any app's control.
Questions
Can I still take screenshots inside VaultCube?
You can press the buttons, but the open vault comes out as a black cover, and the vault locks.
